The soccer World Cup is now at the quarter-final stage and the pick of the draw in the last eight is the clash between Brazil and Belgium on Friday evening in the Kazan Arena.  The winners will face a tough semi-final against either France or Uruguay in what is by far the harder half of the draw.

Brazil go into the game as favourites to win the World Cup, but Belgium has a squad that is the equal of any in Russia, albeit there are question marks over the tactical acumen of coach Roberto Martinez from a defensive viewpoint.

Brazil have only performed in patches in their matches to date and were second best for much of the first-half in the last 16 against Mexico before going on to win 2-0.  Neymar scored one, helped create one and was involved in ridiculous histrionics in attempting to get a player sent-off – a fairly typical Neymar performance it might be said.

Belgium have won all four games they’ve played at World Cup 2018 so far, although they came mighty close to being eliminated in the last 16 by Japan, when they were two goals adrift with barely 20-minutes remaining before fighting back to win 3-2 with a goal from Nacer Chadli deep into stoppage-time.

Brazil have been very sound defensively since Tite took over from the hapless Dunga as coach in June 2016, having conceded just six goals in 25 matches.  Defensive solidity isn’t something one naturally associates with Brazil and that record is likely to be given a severe test by a Belgium team that can boast the talents of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne.

This could potentially be one of the games of the tournament, with the winners having every right to believe that they can go all the way.  It’s also a game that, despite Brazil’s fine defensive record of late, could see a few goals.
