South Africa take on Australia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth in Round 5 of the Rugby Championship on Saturday afternoon, with the teams coming into the game in differing frames of mind on the back of results in Round 4.

The Springboks secured a hugely impressive 36-34 victory away to New Zealand a fortnight ago, while Australia went down to a desperately disappointing 23-19 defeat at home to Argentina (Los Pumas first win in Australia for 35 years).  It was a result that leaves the Wallabies propping up the table with just two rounds of games remaining.

On the plus side from the Australian viewpoint, their one win to date did come against the South Africans with a 23-18 victory in Brisbane three weeks ago.

The Springboks have selected Wasps full-back Willie le Roux, despite having initially saying he wouldn’t be picked for their final two Tests of 2018.  They’ve also recalled Saracens prop Vincent Koch for the Tests against Australia and New Zealand.

South Africa v Australia Team News

Bath flanker Francois Louw has not been selected, while centres Lukhanyo Am and Damian de Allende are both ruled out through injury.  South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has called up the uncapped Western Province centre Ruhan Nel, who, can also operate at full-back and on the wing.

Australia have named captain Michael Hooper in their squad for their Tests in South Africa and Argentina after recovering from a hamstring injury that led to the New South Wales Waratahs flanker being a late withdrawal from the  defeat to Argentina.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has also called-up two uncapped players in flanker Angus Cottrell and scrum-half Jake Gordon.

However, the back row pair of Pete Samu and Lukhan Tui will miss both of the Boks last two Tests.  Samu has a knee injury while Tui is taking time out following the death of his stepfather and an altercation with a fan after the Argentina defeat.
