Both teams began the new season with 1-1 draws, with the Sky Blues claiming a point away to Adelaide United thanks to an Adam Le Fondre equalizer on 78 minutes.

The Wanderers also claimed a point on the road, recovering from a goal down against Perth Glory to level courtesy of Curaçao’s Roly Bonevacia almost midway through the second-half.

Last season the Sky Blues topped the table at the end of the regular A-League campaign, while the Wanderers missed out on the play-offs after finishing in seventh position.

In the three league matches between the teams last season, there were two wins and a draw for Sydney, with a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Stadium in Round 3 in mid-October 2017 in which the Sky Blues had to recover a two goal deficit to claim a point, followed by an emphatic 5-0 victory at the ANZ Stadium a couple of weeks before Christmas and a 3-1 win back on home turf at the Allianz Stadium in late February.

There have been changes in both squads over the close season, with Sydney losing a few big name stars and the Wanderers will be hoping they can perhaps make the most of meeting their neighbours early on in the campaign again, before they hit their stride.

The problem for the Wanderers is that they’ve already faced Sydney in the FFA Cup semi-finals at the Panthers Stadium in Penrith just a couple of weeks ago, where they went down to a fairly comprehensive 3-0 defeat.

Any ideas that the new look Sky Blues might take time to gel were dismissed to some degree in that their three goals all came from new recruits – Trent Buhagiar, Siem de Jong and Le Fondre.
