Western Sydney Wanderers take on Adelaide United at the ANZ Stadium on Sunday evening in what will be the final game to be played in the regular league season.
With Wanderers going into the weekend occupying the final Elimination Finals spot, with a one point advantage over Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory, their fate is very much in their own hands.
The fact that they play their final game the day after the aforementioned duo meet at Glory’s nib Stadium really should give Josep Gombau’s men a distinct advantage, with a win guaranteeing them a top six finish.
Indeed, were Glory and Roar to draw their game, a point would be sufficient for Wanderers to progress. Were they to secure a win by a three-goal margin of greater, Wanderers would actually leapfrog Sunday’s opponents to claim fifth position.
Wanderers put themselves into pole position for the Finals Series with a 3-0 win at home to Roar last weekend to climb above their visitors in the table. All three goals came before the interval, with Spanish striker Oriol Riera scoring the first two to take his A-League tally for the campaign to date to 14.
The Reds have already secured their place in the Finals Series and can finish no higher than their current fifth position. They have relatively little to play for here, other than to avoid a hefty defeat that could see them slip a place in the table and a desire to go into the playoffs on the back of a good performance and result.
Adelaide went down to a 3-0 defeat at Sydney FC last weekend, but wins in their previous couple of games on home soil had already given them a healthy cushion over the chasing pack in the race for a top six finish.
The fact that Wanderers go into this game knowing what they require does make betting on it something of a risk, but they will certainly need a draw as a bare minimum. Their home record this season is solid enough (three losses in 12 games), so they look worth backing at Evens (2.00) with Centrebet to get the job done with a victory.
