The Melbourne Cricket Ground will be rocking this Sunday when ladder-leaders Geelong play a resurgent Essendon. The Cats have played themselves into premiership favouritism, while the Bombers are now viewed by some as potential contenders.
Geelong v Essendon Preview
If you didn’t think Geelong were a contender before, think again. The Cats belted reigning premiers West Coast on Sunday to make it five wins from six and go to outright first on the ladder. Prior to the season, many people were predicting this would be the season the Cats finally fell from contention. Instead, Gary Ablett has turned back the clock, Patrick Dangerfield has returned to his Brownlow form, and a bunch of young guns are having breakout seasons. As a result, the Cats are now top of the AFL premiership odds.

Essendon are still one of the form teams of the comp, despite a narrow loss to Collingwood on Anzac Day. The Bombers had won three straight going into Anzac Day, but can point to the six-day break as a factor in their failure to get over the line against the Pies. There will be no excuses for John Worsfold’s men this week given they have nine days to prepare for the blockbuster against Geelong. Essendon will be sweating on the fitness of last year’s best and fairest winner Devon Smith, who is suffering knee soreness.
Geelong v Essendon Betting Tips
Surprisingly, Essendon have won their last two matches against Geelong, although the Cats had won 12 of the previous 13 going back to 2006. The Bombers are in form, but when the Cats are flying you simply don’t bet against them. PointsBet is paying 1.53 for a Geelong win or 1.88 for a Geelong win with a handicap of -12.5 points.
