Extra-time could be on the cards in Grand Final between Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory

Newcastle Jets take on Melbourne Victory in the A-League Grand Final at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Jets secured their place in the final by beating Melbourne City 2-1 at the at McDonald Jones Stadium, coming from a goal down at half-time to do so.  They were aided by a stunning scorpion-kick goal from 19 year-old midfielder Riley McGree to draw them level just before the hour mark, with Jason Hoffman scoring the decisive goal 15 minutes from time.

Victory claimed a superb 3-2 win in extra-time to knock-out defending champions Sydney FC in front of their own fans at the Allianz Stadium.  Having fallen behind midway through the first-half, few would have given Victory much hope of retrieving the situation against the A-League Premiers.

However, Kosta Barbarouses soon leveled the scores and James Troisi put Victory ahead soon after the interval.  That looked to be the match-winning goal until Victory midfielder Terry Antonis put through his own net deep into stoppage-time to force an additional 30 minutes.

Just when it seemed that penalties were looming, Antonis, himself a former Sydney player, made amends by scoring the decisive goal for Victory with three minutes of extra-time remaining.

One consequence of Victory’s win at the Allianz Stadium is that the Jets now have home turf advantage in the Grand Final.  The game itself is a sell-out.

The Jets finished nine points clear of Victory in the regular season and all three meetings between the teams over the course of the campaign resulted in home wins.  The Jets won 4-1 and 2-0 at the McDonald Jones Stadium, with Victory securing a 2-1 win at AAMI Park sandwiched between their two losses on the road.

The Jets are narrow favourites with the bookies and this does look likely to be a close game between two evenly matched teams.  A draw and extra-time looks a distinct possibility and looking at the Match Result & Both Teams To Score Market, the 100/30 (4.33) on Draw and Yes with bet365 could be a decent bet.
