2019 AFL Round 2 - Geelong v Melbourne Betting Tips 30-03-2019
March 28, 2019
Geelong and Melbourne both had surprise results in round one, the Cats an upset win, the Dees an upset loss. On Saturday night at GMHBA Stadium, we’ll find out if the opening round results were an aberration or a sign of things to come.
Geelong v Melbourne Preview
Geelong sprung one of the biggest surprises of the opening round, playing free-flowing football to overcome Collingwood. Tim Kelly got the headlines for his performance in the midfield, while Rhys Stanley and Esava Ratugolea’s double act on Pies’ ruck Brodie Grundy helped Geelong the points. The two big men will need to be at their best on Saturday if they’re to stop the AFL’s other top ruckman, Max Gawn.

Gawn wasn’t the only Melbourne player to have a shocker last Saturday, with most of his teammates lowering their colours against a Port side that played them off their feet. Melbourne developed a reputation for tough, fast footy in making it to last year’s prelim. They’ll need to rediscover that sort of style if they’re to have a chance of beating Geelong this weekend.

Geelong v Melbourne Betting Tips
Although Melbourne are more heavily favoured in premiership betting, Geelong are actually a clear head-to-head favourite in this match. With that said, it’s hard to see the Dees putting in a second poor performance in a row, and punters might be tempted by MadBookie’s 2.44 on a Melbourne win over Geelong.
Geelong beat Melbourne by three points at the G and two points at GMHBA in the home and away season last year, before Melbourne beat the Cats by 29 points in the elimination final. With the recent history of close games between these sides, punters may want to consider Pointsbet’s 1.37 odds on either team by 1-39 points.
These two sides scored a combined 133 points last week, contributing to the AFL’s lowest-scoring opening round since 1965. Neds is paying 1.87 for a combined total of 169 points or less.
