March 21, 2019
GWS and Essendon were two of the biggest disappointments in the Australian Football League last season. On Sunday, both will be looking to get their 2019 AFL season off to the right start when they meet at Spotless Stadium.

GWS Giants v Essendon AFL Preview
The Giants are confident midfielders Josh Kelly and Jacob Hopper will be ready for round one despite both players missing the JLT pre-season games. Co-captain Callan Ward will miss through injury, as will important defender Nick Haynes. A long injury list is a familiar story for the Giants, but their best 22 is still very strong.

Essendon’s big off-season recruit Dylan Shiel gets to play his old mates in round one. Shiel joins another ex-Giant in Devon Smith in the Bombers’ engine room. If coach John Worsfold can get as much out of Shiel as he has out of last year’ club best and fairest Smith, then the Dons should make the finals. Essendon head into this season with huge expetations, and it will be interesting to see how their forward line functions in the absence of the injured Joe Daniher.

GWS v Essendon Betting Tips
This is the third straight time these clubs meet at Spotless Stadium. The Bombers caused a big upset last time they played, beating the Giants by 35 points off 33 touches to David Zaharakis and a 21-disposal, 13-tackle effort from Devon Smith. A second upset in a row might be beyond the Bombers, but line betting does offer value. Madbookie has Essendon at +8.5 points at $1.95.
It will be interesting to see how teams adapt to the new 6-6-6 format in round one. The AFL brought in these new rules in the hope that it would lead to more open, higher-scoring contests than what we saw last season. GWS and Essendon are both capable of piling on the goals. Bet365 is paying 2.02 for 27 goals or more in this match.
