Midfield Draw For Derby Favourite It’s a Dundeel
November 01, 2012
A full field of sixteen is set to tackle the 2500m Victoria Derby at Flemington on Saturday led by favourite It’s A Dundeel who eased in the betting after pulling a midfield draw.
Murray Baker’s colt drifted to $2.90 with Sportsbet’s fixed odds following Wednesday’s draw when the New Zealander was given barrier 10, directly inside Super Cool who beat him in the Vase last weekend.
Super Cool, a $7.00 chance, upset the odds-on It’s A Dundeel round the tight Moonee Valley track but is uncertain to have the stamina over the extra 460m at Flemington. Question marks hang over a number of the Derby contenders’ ability to see out the trip but the distance should prove a breeze for the favourite.
It’s A Dundeel’s pedigree suggests staying the Derby distance will be no obstacle being by High Chaparral out of Stareel, who is by Zabeel, the super sire of stayers and one of the leading broodmare sires in Australasia.
Hvasstan and Honorius are joint second favourites at £6.50.David Payne trains Honorius and was pleased to see his colt draw barrier two and expects the son of Holy Roman Emperor to reverse Norman Robinson Stakes form with Hvasstan when he was an unlucky second over 2000m.
