Epaulette has won the 2013 running of the Doomben 10,000 finishing two lengths clear of last year’s winner Sea Siren at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.

Unfortunate circumstances during the race meant the Doomben 10,000 was marred by a fatal injury to popular galloper Rangirangdoo from the Chris Waller Stable. The 8-year-old fractured both sesamoids in the turn for home leading to the dual Group One winner being euthanased.

Buffering (7.00) set a hectic pace in the early stages and battled on well for third, just a half-head behind runner-up Sea Siren (17.00), but the big disappointment was a no-show from the favourite. Your Song failed to replicate BTC Cup form and having been well supported from 4.00 into 3.30 couldn’t match the pace set by Buffering and faded dramatically in the straight to finish an eventual sixth.

Epaulette (6.00) who was second to Black Caviar last month adds the Doomben 10,000 to his Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes win in September and is now 4.60 favourite with Luxbet for next month’s Stradbroke Handicap. Sea Siren looked more like the horse we used to know on her first run for new owners Coolmore and can be backed at 9.00 along with Buffering who had to settle for yet another Group 1 place on Saturday.
