With just three rounds of matches remaining in the regular season, this is a key game for both these teams.
For Brisbane Roar, currently third in the table but just a point adrift of leaders Western Sydney Wanderers, the target is to secure the Premier’s Plate, a top two finish and a place in the Finals series and qualification for the AFC Champions League.
Sydney are without a league victory since mid-January, a run that stretches back nine win-less games. At the beginning of that run they were third in the table and looking comfortable for the top six as a bare minimum. Now they visit Brisbane knowing that anything less than three points will leave them with the proverbial mountain to climb to achieve that place in the elimination finals.
The Sky Blues threw away a couple of points at bottom of the table Central Coast Mariners last time out, where they conceded twice in the last five-minutes to draw 2-2. That was a real hammer blow.
On paper, Sydney’s away record isn’t too shabby. However, although they’ve only lost three of their 12 away games to date, half have finished as draws. Also, having won their opening two games on the road this season, they’ve only once since gone home with maximum points.
The Roar has a formidable home record that has seen them amass 29 points from a dozen games at the Suncorp Stadium. One significant loss is captain Matt McKay, who is on international duty with Australia. Coach John Aloisi could turn to another Socceroo, recent signing Tommy Oar, as McKay’s replacement. Defender Jack Hingert misses out through suspension.
The last eight Roar A-league games at the Suncorp have resulted in over 2.5 goals and 10 of 12 matches this season have done so. In fact, their last 10 A-League matches have all featured over 2.5 goals, with all but one of them having over 3.5 goals.
Brisbane Roar’s home record, coupled with Sydney’s lack of form points to a home win. Given the average goal count in Roar’s games of late, backing them to win with over 2.5 goals in the match looks a sound bet.
