A-League: Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC Odds & Preview
January 24, 2013
Resurgent Sydney FC clash with Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Saturday where the spotlight falls on Sydney’s marquee signing Alessandro Del Piero and Victory’s star man Marco Rojas.
The sell-out crowd will be hoping for a repeat of the thriller in Sydney in November when the Victory came from two goals down to win 3-2 and heap trouble on their rivals after the Sky Blues’ struggling start to the season.
But Sydney are back on song, picking up seven points from the past five games to climb within a point of the top six. Del Piero masterminded a sensational 7-1 victory against Wellington last weekend, scoring four goals in a match for the first time in his career. The 38-year-old has a new strike partner in Joel Griffiths who can act as foil to allow the Italian superstar to make a bigger impact for Sydney in the later stage of the season.
Ange Postecoglou will be hoping interest from Europe in wing sensation, Rojas, comes to nothing this transfer window. Liverpool and Juventus have been linked with the Victory’s star man but Rojas is an integral part of the coach’s Grand Final ambitions. Representatives of both clubs will watching from the stands and it will be interesting to see how the Kiwi performs under their watchful gaze in the red-hot atmosphere.
The Victory are currently third in the A-League ladder and, like Saturday’s opponents, have taken seven points from the last five games. With the top two teams in action on Friday, this game provides the opportunity for the Victory to close in on a top two place, which will be invaluable in this season’s shortened finals.
