Newcastle Jets welcome Western Sydney Wanderers to the McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday evening in a game between two of the early A-League pacesetters.

Both teams remain unbeaten after three games apiece, with the Jets currently occupying second spot in the table on seven points after a 2-1 win at Brisbane Roar last weekend.

Irish striker Roy O’Donovan bagged the opening goal for the Jets against the Roar, taking his league tally to five already to top the early season goalscorer charts.  The Jets are also the league’s top scorers at present, with nine goals already to their name.

It’s seven seasons without qualifying for the end of season finals for the Jets but, although it’s clearly still very early days, it’s looking more encouraging than it has done for a long time as to their chances of breaking that drought.

They do have a significant problem to overcome though, with marquee Venezuelan signing Ronald Vargas having suffered what is almost certainly a season-ending broken and dislocated ankle on Sunday.  It’s a potentially huge blow after such a fine start to the season for the Jets.

As for the Wanderers, they are 4th in the table at present with five points after a 2-2 draw at defending champions Sydney FC last week in a game in which they led 2-0 after half-an-hour.  There was another goal for new Spanish striker Oriol Riera, who has now netted seven goals in his last six league and cup matches for the Wanderers.

Losing head coach Tony Popovic on the eve of the new season was a definite blow for the Wanderers, but before joining Turkish club Karabükspor he did strengthen his former squad during the close season and caretaker coach Hayden Foxe has made a decent start since stepping up.

The Wanderers do have the distraction of an FFA Cup semi-final against Adelaide United on the Tuesday before this game but, if they come through that unscathed, they will fancy their chances of taking at least a point from the Jets.

Backing them Draw No Bet at 19/20 (1.95) with Sportsbet looks a good option, ensuring you get your stake back in the event of the game ending all square.
