Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets are squaring off, as the Jest will try to keep up with the top of the table after showing improvement from last season.

Adelaide United welcome the Newcastle Jets to Coopers Stadium on Saturday evening, for a game between two teams who are showing improved form on last season, when they finished in the bottom two of the A-League.

The Reds may have won just one of their opening five matches to date, but they have reached the FFA Cup final where they will face a date with Sydney FC later in the month.

They went down to a 1-0 defeat at Perth Glory in the A-League last week, with a late Andy Keogh goal eventually breaking their resistance.  Goalkeeper Paul Izzo pulled off a string of fine saves to keep them in the game for so long, including an early penalty save.

The improvement in the Jets is more apparent, with their 11 points to date already being exactly half that which they secured in the whole of last season.  Few would have believed that Ernie Merrick would have his new charges still undefeated after five league games or that they would be the leading goalscorers in the division with 13 goals either.

The veteran Irish striker Roy O’Donovan has played a significant role in the Jets improved fortunes, with seven goals already since joining from Central Coast Mariners in the close season.  It’s no surprise that he leads the way in the individual goal stats as things stand.

O’Donovan scored twice in last weekend’s 3-0 win against Wellington Phoenix in a game they dominated from the outset.  Confidence in the camp is obviously high and it’s to their credit that they seem undeterred by the loss of their marquee star Venezuelan attacker Ronald Vargas with a broken leg early on in the campaign.

This could be a close game, but one that might also feature at least a couple of goals.  The Reds are not the most prolific team in front of goal, but the onus will be on them to take the game to the Jets in front of their own supporters.

A draw wouldn’t be a great surprise (available at 13/5 with Unibet), while a score draw can be backed at 100/30 (4.33) with bet365.
