A-League Betting: Back Sydney FC’s ‘Invincibles’ to win at Western Sydney Wanderers

It's time for the Sydney city rivalry match as the Western Sydney Wanderers, looking for a top six finish, face the unbeaten Sydney FC.

Recommended bet: Sydney FC to Win @ 6/5 (2.20) with Sportsbet

It’s the Sydney Derby at the ANZ Stadium on Saturday, with Western Sydney Wanderers looking to stay in contention for a top six finish and to be the team that ends the 19 match unbeaten league run of their city rivals, Sydney FC.

The Wanderers had a desperately disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Central Coast Mariners last Sunday.  Had they won that game, it would have given them just a little breathing space over those pursuing them for the final play-off spot (which Newcastle Jets could move into should they win their game in hand on Monday).

Sydney FC saw off Wellington Phoenix 3-1 last time out with relatively little trouble.  It was all the more impressive given the state of the pitch at the Allianz Stadium.  As a result of the win against the Phoenix, the Sky Blues’ quest to be the A-League’s first ‘Invincibles’ is now just eight games away from being realized.

Their away form has been superb all season, with eight wins and two draws from their 10 away games, including a comprehensive 4-0 win at the ANZ Stadium back in early October.

That spells trouble for a Wanderers team that has registered just a single home victory from nine matches in the current campaign.  The eight goals they have scored at home is also the lowest in the A-League.

By contrast, not only are Sydney the league’s top goal scorers this season (ahead of Melbourne Victory’s trip to Newcastle Jets at least) with 41, but Sydney have also conceded just nine goals to date.  They really have been the dominant force throughout the campaign.

The Sky Blues are already realistically assured of not only progress to the Final Series play-off semi-final, but also of being crowned A-League Premiers.  Their one aim for the remainder of the regular season is to go into the record books by maintaining their unbeaten run.  It would also maintain their momentum going into the play-offs.

The form book often goes out the window in local derbies, but it’s difficult to look past the visitors on this occasion and they can be backed at a decent 6/5 (2.20) with Sportsbet to prevail.
